Breakaway republics fascinate me. It’s a story of how a section of a country feels so strongly that they aren’t part of that country that they pull away, but don’t manage to separate completely. Some of these countries eventually gain independence, others don’t ever really intend to get it, and still others remain in limbo, part and yet not part of the host country.

The annual data book on armed forces around the world The Military Balance 2015 calls a “hybrid war” capture and subordination of the territory with the help of large-scale, rapid informational, electronic and cyber operations, cover-up and concealment of military and intelligence operations taking place together with intense economic pressure”.

If you don’t hold your military actions, tomorrow I will have breakfast in Tiraspol, lunch in Chisinau and dinner in Bucharest – with those words general Lebied stopped Moldovan army in 1992 and de facto created a new country on the European map: Pridniestrovian Moldavian Republic, which officialy keeps close relationship with Russia and remains in their influence until today. Lebied threat was so powerful that resulted in ceasefire right on the next day. Situation has not changed over the last 20 years.

​The Foreign Minister of Pridnestrovie Nina Shtanski in an interview to the Zvezda TV Channel spoke about the situation in the unrecognized state. According to her, the situation has aggravated drastically.  

 “The Blockade ring is closed, Ukraine has blocked all our import. We are not able to fully carry out our social obligations to the people. Ukraine has also blocked the freedom of movement for Pridnestrovian citizens with Russian passports,” Shtanski said.

Pridnestrovie fears a possible escalation of tensions on the border with Ukraine. As reported by TASS news agency, that was said on Monday by Head of the Foreign Ministry of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (the PMR) Nina Shtanski.
