Today, Shuaib Chalklen, the UN Special Rapporteur on Disability held an open lecture “Apartheid Enigma” in the auditorium of T.G. Shevchenko Pridnestrovian State University. The event took place within the framework of educational course «Knowledge is GREAT», held by the British Embassy. Emmy Sherwood, the British Deputy Ambassador to Moldova attended the lecture.
In the course of the lecture the expert highlighted historical background for the origin of the apartheid system in the Republic of South Africa (RSA), combating it and its impact on the contemporary social and political life in the country. Earlier, Sh. Chalklen, as a consultant of the RSA President Nelson Mandela, participated directly in the dismantling the apartheid regime in South Africa. The lecturer noticed that the interest of the international community towards the apartheid is still high. “People are interested in how we managed to resolve the conflict which existed for decades, how we approached this problem and were able to set up the RSA as a stable and peaceful state,”- he said. The expert also noted that the apartheid remains the unprecedented phenomenon of the twentieth century, when the racial oppression continued to exist for many decades after the events of the Second World War and the adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.
The lecture was followed by a seminar “Way to peace” for students and specialists.
