UN Special Representative for Human Rights in Pridnestrovie: “The Problems of Pridnestrovie Are Connected with the Unrecognition, but it is Rather Political Problem but not a Problem of Human Rights”

UN Special Representative for human rights in Pridnestrovie Thomas Hammarberg finished his third final visit to the republic. On November 6, Special Representative held a press conference and told about particular aspects of conducted work.

Thomas Hammarberg highly appreciated the openness of Pridnestrovian authorities and their readiness to cooperation in the sphere of protection of human rights. UN Special Representative noted as a positive fact the possibility to choose the places and the people for visits in the republic. “You understand that the problems exist and that it is necessary to solve them,” he emphasized. According to the report of UN Special Representative, he managed to visit pretrial detention centers, prisons and children's homes.

During his conversation with journalists Thomas Hammarberg noticed that due to understanding of the topicality of existing problems by the leadership of the republic certain progress in observation of human rights has already been reached. “When I came to Pridnestrovie I got evidence that normal European society lives here. People face the same problems that exist in other countries. I am far from comparing the countries but Pridnestrovie has certain progress in settlement of a number of issues. Problems of Pridnestrovie are connected with unrecognition, but it is rather political problem but not a problem of human rights,” the expert made a conclusion.

Thomas Hammarberg informed the representatives of Mass Media that after his visit to Pridnestrovie he would attend other countries in order to study the practice of observation of human rights. The results of his investigation will be reflected in detailed report which will include specific recommendations. According to the expert, the report will be ready by the end of next January.
