The next stage of removal of ionizing radiation sources was held on March 25, 2016. The ionizing radiation sources (IRS) were removed from the territory of JSC “Moldavskaya GRES” (state power station) with a view to burring subsequently in a special facility in the Republic of Moldova. The procedure was organized with the participation of representatives of the Civil Protection Headquarters, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republican Centre of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and other relevant bodies. Total amount of the removed sources was 1,052 units.
The event was carried out in accordance with the protocol decision “On the order and procedures for the removal of ionizing radiation sources (IRS) in the territory of Pridnestrovie” dated March 14, 2012, with assistance of the OSCE Mission.
At present, in Pridnestrovian enterprises and institutions there are decommissioned devices (smoke and level detectors, etc.) containing different types of IRS. Utilization of these radioactive sources in Pridnestrovie is not possible due to lack of special facilities to bury them.
The PMR Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue working on the removal of ionizing radiation sources in cooperation with the relevant authorities of the country.
