On the Meeting of Expert (Working) Groups on Environmental Issues

06/23/25

Today, a videoconference was held between environmental experts from Pridnestrovie and the Republic of Moldova.
A wide range of issues was discussed, with the parties focusing primarily on the condition of the Dniester River ecosystem. In the context of the sustainable use of the river’s aquatic biological resources, the experts agreed to exchange hydrometeorological data in a timely manner in order to synchronize the fishing ban periods on the Dniester during the spawning season.
In addition, the representatives of Pridnestrovie emphasized the importance of both parties fulfilling the obligations outlined in the Protocol on Cooperation between Pridnestrovie and the Republic of Moldova in the Regulation of Fishing and Sustainable Use of the Aquatic Biological Resources of the Dniester River dated June 15, 2016.
As part of the discussion on the preservation of the Dniester aquatic biological resources, the Pridnestrovian side proposed conducting coordinated anti-poaching activities on a systematic basis, involving the relevant fisheries oversight agencies of both parties.
The experts also discussed the issues of the Dniester River’s shallowing and the formation of black silt, which require data exchange between scientific institutions as well as adaptation to climate change.
In addition, the parties considered matters related to the exchange of hydrometeorological data between the authorized institutions, in accordance with the Protocol on Cooperation in the Field of Hydrometeorology dated June 10, 2016.
A separate topic of discussion was the potential implementation of projects – with the support of international donors – aimed at the disposal of hazardous chemicals and persistent organic pollutants (such as polychlorinated biphenyls) generated by agricultural or industrial activities.
Other relevant environmental issues were also addressed during the meeting.
