Statement by the PMR Foreign Ministry

01/24/25

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs draws attention to the ongoing campaign by Moldovan officials aimed at public misleading with regard to the worsening energy and humanitarian crisis in Pridnestrovie.

Showing extreme cynicism and lacking hesitation, Moldovan representatives stalls and keeps appearance of invincible bureaucratic obstacles to addressing current issues. They share contradictory statements and publicly tie the task of saving nearly half a million Pridnestrovians with deliberately unfeasible and unreasonable demands.

The essence of these comments boils down to attempts of misleading the population and provoking destabilization of the social and political situation in Pridnestrovie. In this regard, we draw their attention to the fact that the Pridnestrovian people have extensive experience in dealing with neighboring Moldova and its representatives and are well aware of Chisinau’s motives and objectives.

We see a clear attempt to shift all the blame for the current situation onto the Russian side. In this regard, we emphasize that the Russian Federation is doing everything possible to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible.

Once again, let us refresh the memory of Moldovan representatives with several undeniable facts.

In late 2024, namely Pridnestrovie proposed to Moldova a joint appeal to Russia and Ukraine to continue humanitarian gas transit after 1 January 2025. However, the Moldovan side rejected this initiative.

Let us also recall that SA Moldovagaz officially and directly notified Pridnestrovie on December 28, 2024 about the cessation of gas supplies. Thus, the supplier declared its failure to fulfill contractual obligations. Under these circumstances, the Pridnestrovian side was forced to seek alternative options for energy resource imports to overcome the crisis as quickly as possible.

It was precisely due to Chisinau’s refusal to cooperate with its own licensed supplier that the Pridnestrovian side officially notified the Moldovan side in writing on 18 January of this year about its willingness to interact with SA Moldovagaz, guaranteeing payment for the gas.

However, the arrangements of gas transit to Pridnestrovie, already facilitated by SA Moldovagaz, is being further blocked under far-fetched pretexts. Instead of fulfilling the personal promise of the Moldovan president, officially supported by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ms. Elina Valtonen, during her visit on 9 January 2025, and instead of accelerating the resolution of formal procedures, Chisinau’s representatives once again resort to making accusations and threats. Propagandists complain about an alleged lack of information regarding the proposed models for gas supplies to Pridnestrovie.

We draw the attention of the Moldovan side to the fact that SA Moldovagaz has already started negotiations with an independent European trader on this matter. We are surprised that high-ranking Moldovan officials remain unaware of this process and continue to mislead the public.

In the context of statements made by some officials of Moldova regarding the possibility of coal supplies for the operation of the Kuchurgan Power Plant, we recommend inquiring with relevant specialists, including Ukrainian experts, about the technological features of the coal used in the power station’s operation.

To summarize the above, we urge the officials of Moldova to focus all efforts on the swift resolution of the crisis and the prevention of a humanitarian disaster and human suffering. The declarations and actions of Moldovan representatives strongly imply an intention to prolong the crisis, as well as the use of discriminatory approaches toward the Pridnestrovians, who are being treated as hostages in unscrupulous political games, with new “insurmountable” circumstances and “difficulties” invented each time.
