Comment by PMR Foreign Minister on Moldova’s Speculative Statements

12/06/24

Regarding the statements of RM Political Representative Oleg Serebrian posted in Moldovan media allegedly claiming lacking request of Pridnestrovie for assistance, we deem it important to emphasize as follows.

The long-standing international negotiation process conceptually represents a string of direct and systematic addresses from Pridnestrovie to Moldova, urging it to cease the application of discriminatory and restrictive measures, to abandon socio-economic pressure, and to stop violations of the rights and freedoms of the Pridnestrovians.

Pridnestrovie has repeatedly appealed to Moldova so far, asking to cease banking and financial blockade, the unreasonable levying of customs duties, as well as environmental, licensing and other fees. It also calls for an end to restriction on the industrial product export, impeding the import of medications, medical equipment, fertilizers, and others vital goods. Furthermore, Pridnestrovie urges Moldova not to allow politically motivated criminal prosecution of Pridnestrovian residents. At the same time, the Pridnestrovian side generates specific proposals for each case and remains open to discussing any significant issue on the current agenda.

Official Chisinau is further evading the implementation of constructive measures, including proposals recommended by international mediators aimed at stabilizing the situation, enhancing mutual trust, and improving the conditions for the population and economic operators. As a result, the Moldovan side bears direct responsibility for the expanding set of challenges, which depth and destructive potential have already reached a regional scale.

In his comments to the media, the Moldovan chief negotiator attempts to avoid responsibility, verbally distancing himself from the looming serious problems, including the energy sector. These issues stem from Chisinau’s prolonged disregard for the worsening situation and its failure to take any practical steps to promptly unblock banking and financial activities, foreign trade, transport services, and numerous other matters.

The critical concerns arising today with regard to the natural gas and energy supply directly result from the policies of the Moldovan authorities, who sabotage dialogue, disregard the interests of suppliers and consumers, and impose unjustified restrictions on the residents and enterprises of Pridnestrovie.

We urge the Political Representative of the Republic of Moldova to stop the inappropriate attempts to shift responsibility for own miscalculations and refusal to engage in regular dialogue, and, instead of making interpretations, to use the available time and opportunities for the prompt normalization of interactions with Pridnestrovie in order to tackle the pressing issues.
