On the Meeting with the President to Address the Situation with New Customs Burdens Imposed on Pridnestrovian Economic Entities by the Republic of Moldova

01/10/24

The beginning of 2024 is marked for Pridnestrovian participants of foreign trade by new difficulties imposed by Moldova. Reports came about the demand to pay customs duties not levied before. The situation was discussed at a meeting with the PMR President. Alexander Rosenberg, Chairman of the PMR Government, Sergey Obolonik, his deputy - Minister of Economic Development, Valentin Grabco, head of the PMR State Customs Committee, and Vitaly Ignatiev, head of the republic’s foreign ministry, took part in the working discussion.

Vadim Krasnoselsky asked about the Moldovan side’s reaction to the requests sent on his instructions. According to the heads of Pridnestrovian agencies, no information has been received from Moldovan officials that clearly and distinctly discloses Moldova’s position on this issue. At the same time, alarming signals from Pridnestrovian economic entities continue to arrive, Sergey Obolonik said. Vitaly Ignatiev stressed that at the end of last year, meetings of the relevant expert working groups were held within the framework of the negotiation process during which there were no references to the forthcoming novelties.

The President emphasized that the practice of imposing restrictions by Moldova is not new. The problem of the banking sector is still pressing. According to Vadim Krasnoselsky, Pridnestrovian businessmen, on the one hand, are provided with the opportunity to operate on the European market within the DCFTA framework, but on the other hand, Moldova restricts the implementation by its internal decisions. The Pridnestrovian head of state said the work should be continued. First of all, it is necessary to find out Moldova’s official position on the new fiscal burdens. In addition, the President instructed to involve the Permanent Conference participants, including the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office (Malta) who took office early this year, in the discussion and resolution of the situation.
