On removal of ionizing radiation sources from Pridnestrovie

04/30/15

On April 28 and 29, 2015 the removal of ionizing radiation sources (IRS) in institutions and enterprises of Pridnestrovie took place.

Radioactive sources have been removed from the territory of Moldova Steel Works in Rybnitsa and a number of organizations of Tiraspol with a view to subsequent disposal in a special facility in Moldova.

The procedure was organized with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Protection Headquarter, the Republican Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology and other relevant bodies.

Events for the removal of sources of ionizing radiation are carried out in accordance with the Protocol decision “On the order and procedures for the removal of ionizing radiation sources (IRS) in the territory of Pridnestrovie” dated March 14th, 2012 and with the assistance of the OSCE Mission.

At present, there is decommissioned equipment in enterprises and institutions of Pridnestrovie (smoke and level detectors), containing various types of IRS. However, the utilization of these radioactive sources in Pridnestrovie is not possible due to lack of special facilities for their disposal.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue in cooperation with the relevant authorities of the country the work on removal of IRS.
