Today, Pridnestrovie saw removal of Ionizing Radiation Sources which were taken from the Central Municipal Library and State Unitary Enterprise “GK Dnestrenergo” for the subsequent disposal on a dedicated facility in Moldova.
It should be noted, that this event became possible thanks to assistance of the OSCE Mission to Moldova and is based on the provisions of the Protocol Decision “On the Order and Procedures of Removal of Ionizing Radiation Sources (IRS) from the territory of Pridnestrovie” signed on March 14, 2012. It was also in March 2012, that the first stage of IRS removal from Sugar and Alcohol Plant in Rybnitsa took place.
Procedure of removal was organized with the participation of Interdepartmental working group on IRS removal for their disposal outside Pridnestrovie which consisted of representatives of Foreign Ministry, Civil Protection Headquarters, Republican Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and other competent structures.
Currently, separate enterprises and institutions of Pridnestrovie house temporary stored IRS which were taken out of commission and which are unsuitable for further use, such as smoke detectors, liquid content gages, densitometers and others. However, utilization and disposal of these sources in Pridnestrovie is impossible in view of the absence of special facilities for their disposal on the territory of the PMR.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that implementation of such an important event in terms of health and environment protection will become systemic and sustainable.
