08/31/14

During the International Conference held today in Tiraspol, experts discussed key aspects and historical experience of the Jassy-Kishinev operation. Participants touched on various topics of Moldovan and Pridnestrovian history during the Great Patriotic War, in particular: resistance of the Soviet people against Romanian-German invaders, fight of clandestine groups against the invaders, particularities of Holocaust in Pridnestrovie and Moldova, and others.

The nature of the 1941-1942 war for the Moldovan people was the main topic of the report by the candidate of historical sciences Sergei Nazaria. He highlighted the fact that in those years the majority of the Moldovan population sabotaged Romanian mobilization. “In addition, 62 000 residents of Bessarabia and Bukovel in 1941 deserted, refusing to defend Romanian authorities. The percentage of participation of Moldovan volunteers in the Soviet army was higher than in the whole USSR, i.e. for the Moldovan people this war was really Patriotic”, said Sergei Nazaria.

Aurelian Lavrik, a Moldovan expert, candidate of historical sciences, as a result of his study of the documents from the archives of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, reported the new facts of the Romanian-German occupation of the Dniester-Bug interfluve. The speaker focused on the reasons of actions of the Romanian army, on the “Romanization of Transnistria” plan, on the Holocaust in Romania and Moldova.

More information about the tragedy of the Jewish people was delivered by Ph.D. in political science Evgeniy Brick. The expert gave data on the number of deaths among the Jewish population in those horrific years. So, in Bessarabia at the least estimates about 87,000 people died, and at the most - about 250 - 300 thousand people; on the territory of Transnistria the number of fallen was more than 220 thousand people.
Vasiliy Kashyrin, a candidate of historical sciences, made a report on “The military potential of Romania during the Second World War”. He spoke about countries involved in the supply of weapons for the Romanian army, its components and quantity.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Igor Shornikov in his report focused on the topic “Patriotic clandestine resistance in Dubossary during the fascist occupation (September 1941 – April 1944). “During the years of occupation, a patriotic group of clandestine resistance acted in Dubossary. The participants raised the spirit of the citizens, suggested them sabotage methods against invaders activities, carried out combat operations. Members of the clandestine group in Dubossary displayed courage and heroism and caused significant damage to the enemy,” said the diplomat.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Vitaliy Ignatiev in his report gave consideration to the historical experience of the Jassy-Kishinev operation in the context of today's security challenges. In particular, the diplomat said that Pridnestrovie today faces new challenges and threats, namely the actions of the neighboring countries aimed at isolation, such as a full-scale economic blockade. “In such a difficult situation historical experience of the Jassy–Kishinev Operation as well as the shared memory of the heroic past has a special value,” said Deputy Minister. “In periods of drastic changes in a society, in moments of a serious danger to the existence of the people, the historical memory plays especially consolidating and inspiring role. Solution of many problems, facing society in conditions of radical political and socio-economic changes, depends on the ability to use the historical experience and to draw the moral from the past”, concluded Vitaliy Ignatiev.
