The journalists of the “Parliamentary newspaper” of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation asked President of Pridnestrovie Yevgeny Shevchuk to make a comment on the decision adopted today by the Verkhovna Rada concerning the denunciation of the agreement on transit of Russian military personnel and cargo through the territory of Ukraine to Pridnestrovie. (We publish the full text of the comment of the President of the PMR given to the Russian media).

Yevgeny Shevchuk, the President of the PMR, “The decision causes concern in Pridnestrovie because this is about the factors of actual destruction of the foundations of functioning of the current peacekeeping operation carried out jointly by contingents of the conflicting parties - Moldova and Pridnestrovie, by the Russian contingent and with the participation of Ukrainian military observers.

We hope that our partners in Kiev realize that the peacekeeping operation is the only effective basis for peace and security in the conflict region today. It is generally recognized that in international practice this peacekeeping operation shows a unique performance of peacekeeping, mechanisms for containing the opposing parties and post-conflict ensuring stability.

The step made in Kiev today is regrettable because the closure of the mechanisms for providing the peacekeeping operation means the creation risks of destabilizing the situation in the region.

According to the Pridnestrovian side, closing the peacekeeping operation should be solely the result of a final peaceful political settlement of the conflict between Kishinev and Tiraspol. The principle of this synchronization was founded many years ago, and repeatedly affirmed at the international level.

On the basis of the adopted decisions, there are questions about the motives of actions aimed at destabilizing the situation with unpredictable consequences in terms of existing regional risks and challenges. This decision, according to the Pridnestrovian side, promotes the growth of tension”.
