During the meeting the participants discussed the current situation relating to ensuring human rights on freedom of conscience, religion, and belief, as well as in the context of the recommendations made during Mr Bielefeldt's previous visit. Vitaly Ignatiev notes that this sphere, as other directions of cooperation with the United Nations system organizations is a priority area for Pridnestrovie. The Diplomat expressed confidence that since the last visit of the expert in 2011 the situation in ensuring freedom of conscience in Pridnestrovie has changed for the better.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, in his turn, expressed his gratitude for making it possible to receive up-to-date information on that sphere. Heiner Bielefeldt also appreciated the adoption of the Law of the PMR On Alternative Civilian Service giving the right to do alternative civilian service rather than compulsory military service to be compatible with their beliefs and religion.
In conclusion, Mr Bielefeldt expressed the appreciation to the representatives of Pridnestrovie for the readiness for an open dialogue. The sides agreed to continue cooperation on the constructive base.
