On the threshold of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War a solemn ceremony of honouring veterans was held. During the event, President Yevgeny Shevchuk and Russian Ambassador to Moldova Farit Mukhametshin presented Pridnestrovian and Russian jubilee medals to veterans.
The ceremony was also attended by Prime Minister of the PMR Tatiana Turanskaya, Deputy Prime Minister of the PMR for International Cooperation, Foreign Minister Nina Shtanski.
Yevgeny Shevchuk, the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic: “Dear veterans of the Great Patriotic War! Dear guests! I am glad to welcome you here today on the threshold of Victory Day! A heroic exploit of the people defended the freedom and independence of their homeland, saved the world from fascism will remain in the memory of the current generation forever.
The 9th of May is a date forever written in the history of our state. The Victory Day is the dearest holiday for all of us. On this day we remember the brave sons of the Fatherland who sacrificed their lives for the peaceful future of the next generations. He will forever remain a day of great national feat, a day of saving the world.
Almost every second family of Pridnestrovie has relatives who died during the Great Patriotic War. Our fathers and grandfathers defended the right to live and develop in their native land at the expense of their lives. Today we bow our heads before our veterans with a great respect and gratitude. We honour the generation of winners with deep gratitude. You earned forever the memory in our hearts with your dedication, exceptional courage and patriotism. Eternal memory to the dead.
Long live the Great Red Army! I wish veterans good health, vitality, optimism and many long years of life!”
The President expressed special thanks to the Russian side for the support to veterans of the Great Patriotic War, as well as for the opportunity to store the exact copy of the Victory Banner in Pridnestrovie.
In his address, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Moldova Farit Mukhametshin thanked the veterans for military work. “This is a great honour for me to perform instructions of the President of the Russian Federation, to present you with commemorative medals which our dear veterans are now getting across Russia, - said the Russian Ambassador to Moldova. - We will continue to stand ready to assist you providing funds for treatment, for acquiring the necessary things, to provide further assistance and support”.
Farit Mukhametshin also noted the intensification of Russian-Pridnestrovian contacts reminding of the signing of several agreements between the ministries and departments of Russia and Pridnestrovie, as well as the construction of social facilities in the republic. “We want and wish Pridnestrovie to prosper,” - said the Russian Ambassador to Moldova.
Along with state awards the veterans received the Russian and Pridnestrovian financial assistance.
For reference: According to available data, during the Great Patriotic War more than 40 thousand Pridnestrovians took part in the fighting. More than 18 thousand lost and died on the battlefield. About 50 thousand inhabitants of Pridnestrovie died during the occupation.
