On July 30 and 31 this year Pridnestrovie held commemorative events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. On July 30 the round table "The First World War: historical memory and contemporary interpretation" and opening of several museum exhibitions took place in the Dvorets Respubliki State Cultural Center. On July 31 the commemorations continued with the Divine Liturgy in the temple of Faithful Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky on the territory of Bendery fortress, followed by the ceremony of laying flowers at the monument erected in honor of the valor of the Russian soldiers, officers and generals who fought in Pridnestrovie during World War I of 1914-1918. The ceremony was attended by the Chairperson of the PMR's Government Tatiana Turanskaya, Chief of the Presidential Office of the PMR Nadezhda Baranova, Archbishop Savva of Tiraspol and Dubossary, representatives of the military, political and social circles. The Foreign Minister of the PMR was presented by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Shornikov.
A memorial plaque in honor of General A.A. Brusilov, who resided in the city, was opened on the territory of the railway station in Bendery. Honorary right to open the memorial plaque to the famous general of the First World War was given to the Archbishop Savva of Tiraspol and Dubossary and to the Head of the State Administration of Bendery Yuri Gervazyuk. In his welcoming address the head of the city thanked the Archbishop Savva of Tiraspol and Dubossary for his great contribution to the maintenance of the historical heritage of the city."Preserving the memory of the First World War is a duty and right to be proud of our compatriots who lost their lives for the great future of the united country", - commented the event held today Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Schornikov. The diplomat expressed the view that the younger generation today does not well know the heroes of the First World War, including those who are our countrymen, does not know ideals which they fought for. "They fought for Great Russia, for freedom and independence of the orthodox peoples of the Balkans, for the preservation of fraternal relations and unity of the Slavic people. It is necessary to recognize that this war, as well as the Patriotic War of 1812 and series of Russian-Turkish wars of XVIII and XIX century, in which the inhabitants of Pridnestrovie also participated, determine today the attitude of our people as a part of the Russian world", - he said. The ceremonies culminated today in Tiraspol with opening the commemorative plate to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the litia for victims in the Svyato-Vvedensko-Pakhomiev monastery.
