It has been 15 years today since the Basic Agreement on Friendship and Co-operation between South Ossetia and Pridnestrovie was signed. To commemorate this jubilee date, Tskhinval and Tiraspol organized a joint issue of postage stamps. The capital of Pridnestrovie saw the ceremony of their special cancellation which was attended by PMR's Foreign Minister Vladimir Yastrebchak, his Deputy Sergey Simonenko, Assistant to the President Elena Bomeshko, head of the Official Representation of South Ossetia in Pridnestrovie Sergey Surago, and also members of the Republic's Post Office. “A joint issue of postage stamps is widely-spread around the world, though in Pridnestrovie it takes place for the first time,” marked the head of the MFA in his speech. In his words, this joint event has become a one more sharp evidence of a close co-operation between the two states which develops step by step from year to year.”
The stamps of joint issue were almost simultaneously put into circulation in Tskhinval and Tiraspol, and have already been used in post offices of both republics. As Vladimir Yastrebchak announced, a joint postage issue can give start to a nice tradition of collaboration in this area. “South Ossetia and our country have many themes in common that can be depicted on the stamps. Besides, we plan to realize such joint projects with Abkhazia, and we would also like to organize postage issues in the three-sided format,” noted the Minister.
