Sergei Gubarev: Measures Taken by Tiraspol Should be Understood, Appreciated and Supported in Kishinev

Ambassador-at-large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Gubarev told about situation in Moldova-Pridnestrovie settlement process on its present stage and about new mechanisms utilized by Tiraspol and Kishinev in their dialogue in his exclusive interview to Radio Europa Libera.

According to Sergei Gubarev, existing approach towards resolving political issues in relations between Pridnestrovie and Moldova brought no practical and substantial results for two dozens of years. “For 20 years the approach was the following: first political solution and only then all other issues. We can see the results of such approach which has been implemented for the last 20 years”, – he said.

Russian diplomat believes that issues which interest the citizens should be resolved first and foremost. In this connection new tactics chosen by President of the PMR Yevgeny Shevchuk is correct. “With accession of new leadership in Tiraspol, as far as I can see, new tactics was chosen which can be seen on this stage – the tactics of small steps. We can see attempts to resolve issues, first of all, in order to facilitate life conditions, contacts and ties between people living on both banks of Dniester”, – Sergei Gubarev pointed out. He expressed his confidence that it is premature to summarize the results of the tactics of “small steps”. “Tactics of small steps is carried out by new leadership for last 6-7 months. It is extremely short period of time in comparison with 20 years. Let's allow time, let's see to what extent this tactics will give real results”, – diplomat said.

According to Sergei Gubarev, unwillingness of the Moldovan side to make reciprocal steps towards Tiraspol is one of the obstacles hindering effective realization of tactics of “small steps”. “If we compare qualitatively those measures which have been taken by Tiraspol from the first days of Yevgeny Shevchuk's accession, and if we try to understand what have been done by Kishinev, the score will be not in Kishinev's favor. By his very first decrees Yevgeny Shevchuk implemented number of actions, aiming at facilitation of crossing administrative border between Pridnestrovie and Moldova, at facilitation of commodity relations between Pridnestrovie and Moldova, but there is still no adequate answer from Kishinev's side”, – Sergei Gubarev stated. According to him, Kishinev should demonstrate understanding, appreciation and support towards measures, implemented by Tiraspol. Today, according to Russian diplomat, there can bee seen no trace of such support.
