Nina Shtanski and Thomas Hammarberg – Dialogue without Intermediaries

Today, foreign office of Pridnestrovie hosted the meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PMR Nina Shtanski with UN Senior Expert on Human Rights in Pridnestrovie Thomas Hammarberg.

In the course of the meeting the sides discussed a number of complex issues relating to human rights protection in Pridnestrovie. In particular, Nina Shtanski informed Thomas Hammarberg about problems faced by the holders of Russian and Ukrainian passports when crossing the Moldovan border, as well as by the Pridnestrovian people who cannot use full railway link.

Apart from that, the Minister told Thomas Hammarberg about problems in carrying out foreign economic activity by the Pridnestrovian enterprises. “Such enterprises as TIROTEX, InterCenterLux, Elektromash are not just brands: salaries and provision with workplaces of a large number of people depend on the efficiency of their work. And today these enterprises are struggling for their rights, inter alia in judicial instances of the Republic of Moldova,” Nina Shtanski told. The Pridnestrovian diplomat marked that unfortunately not all international actors realize that solving the problem of the functioning of Pridnestrovian enterprises is directly connected with respect for human rights who work there. Nina Shtanski also stressed that the rights for health, education and well-being are fundamental human rights. “They cannot be dependant on the extent to which political problems are solved, on the level of conflict of the region, or recognition of international legal standing of the state. These human rights must be ensured,” the Minister told.

Responding to the questions of the journalists, Nina Shtanski paid attention to the fact that today cooperation of Pridnestrovie with United Nations Organization on issues relating to human rights is carried out without intermediaries. “For the first time in 20 years UNO has established post of UN Senior Expert on Human Rights in Pridnestrovie. The fact that this is really dialogue without mediators is important for us,” the Minister explained. In her words, international representative has the opportunity to get first-hand necessary information about the situation in various legal matters.

Visit by Thomas Hammarberg to Pridnestrovie will last six days. During this time, Senior Expert will meet with the leadership of the republic and representatives of the civil society, in particular, with organizations dealing with human rights.
